A mother has three sick children. She has a 24-ounce bottle of medicine and needs to give each child eight ounces of the medicine. she is unable to get to the store and has only three clean containers. which measures 5, 11, 13 ounces respectively. The electricity is out and she has no way of heating water to clean the bottles and provide the medicines hygienically.
How can their mother give the medicine to 3 children an equal portion such that no two children drink from the same container?
In order to give 3 children 8 ounces of medicine in 3 different containers, we have to use 24 ounces bottle as well, because we can’t fill 8 ounces in 5 ounces capacity bottle. Now we have to use: 24, 13, 11 ounces of bottles respectively as follows:
Step 1: Firstly, fill 5 ounces and 11 ounces bottle from 24 ounces bottle
After this: 24 ounces bottle has 8 ounces left in it.
Step 2: Secondly, transfer 11 ounces to 13 ounces bottle which leaves 2 ounces space empty in 13 ounces bottle. Now, transfer pills from 5 ounces to 13 ounces which leave 3 ounces in 5 ounces bottle shift this 3 ounces to 5 ounces bottle this makes 5 ounces bottle empty.
Step 3: Lastly, pour 5 ounces from the 13 ounces bottle to 5 ounces bottle leaving 8 ounces in the 13 ounces bottle. Next, pour the 5 ounces from 5 ounces bottle to 11 ounces bottle giving 8 ounces in the 11 ounces container.
Now, 11, 13, and 24 ounces bottle has 8 ounces left in it which can be given to 3 children.
